30 Minutes- Ana Castillo
A Mother's Day edition of 30 Minutes features 3 readings by author Ana Castillo from her May 4th public presentation at the John Valenzuela Youth Center. On May 4th, renowned Chicana poet, essayist, novelist and author of So Far From God, Ana Castillo gave a reading at the John Valenzuela Youth Center in South Tucson. Castillo decided to reach out to Tucson High teacher Curtis Acosta after she learned that two of her books were among those that TUSD officials had removed from classrooms after Mexican American Studies classes were ended mid term.

She initially intended to attend classes and meet with students in the schools, but declined when TUSD officials rejected her request to bring the media with her to the classrooms. Writer Ana Castillo decided to move into a community venue for all to attend. Before the public reading,  Dr. Castillo met separately with students who were enrolled in Mexican American Studies and discussed her writing which was a pivotal part of the program. Following the public presentation, Ana Castillo attended a Save Ethic Studies fundraiser and taught a workshop the next day.
