McCain picks Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as VP in Dayton
DAYTON, OH
(WYSO) -
The scene at the Nutter Center was complete with a live band, video montages and even McCain cheerleaders. When Senator McCain made his announcement as to his choice, it was well received by the excited crowd.
Mary Piper of Dayton said she didn't know much about Sarah Palin before today, but was impressed by her speech.
"I've got 5 boys and I'm worried," says Piper, "What does the future hold for my boys? And then I see her as a mother and her son has stepped up to the plate to defend the country and I think that's who we need to get this country back on track."
Centerville resident Aaron Underwood thought Governor Pawlenty was going to be the pick and was surprised by McCain's announcement.
"I wish these guys the best of luck. And I wonder if it isn't a ploy to go after the women who supported Senator Clinton in the primarary run against Senator Obama. But I wish them the best," says Underwood.
But not everyone came out to show their support of Senator McCain. Joe Boseman of Dayton stood outside the Nutter Center in protest. He says he supported Hillary Clinton in the primaries. He adds that he's listened to both the positions of the Democrats and Republicans, and feels strongly that Senator McCain is out of touch.
"I don't think he honestly cares about the lower income economy," says Boseman, "He doesn't have an honest plan of being able to pick up the lower economy and bringing it back into the fold. He does not plan on creating future industries, especially in areas like Ohio and Michigan."
However, most of the crowd at the Nutter Center seemed very enthusiastic. Senator McCain says he was very happy to make the announcement in Dayton, calling it "a city built on hard honest work and good people".
