Sudan and the Ginghamsburg church
(2011-01-28)
(WYSO) - Earlier this month, a referendum took place. The question - whether the southern Christian region of Sudan should seek independence from the mostly Muslim region in the north. Millions of Sudanese voted on the referendum and it seems likely that Southern Sudan will gain its independence. As WYSO's Jerry Kenney reports - here in the United States, Sudanese refugees also took part in the vote and one Ohio church was able to help.

During the referendum earlier this month, eight cities in the US opened up polls allowing Sudanese refugees to vote on the question of independance and on January Ninth more than 100 members of the Ginghamsburg Church in Tipp City - Near Dayton, Ohio - took part by providi ng transportation and childcare for the refugees. Today I spoke with Mike Slaughter, who is lead pastor at the Church.

(Describes transporation and childcare efforts, what independance will mean for Sudanese refugees in the U.S., and what happens next.)

After that Mike Slaughter says Ginghamsburg church will continue what they've been doing since 2005. Building clean water yards for safe drinking, working on agricultural projects that are helping to feed people, and developing schools. They've been expanding their outreach efforts every year and have so far raised more than five million dollars to fund humanitarian projects.
