Possible cases of Swine Flu in Montgomery County
YELLOW SPRINGS, OH
(WYSO) -
Bill Wharton is the spokesman for Public Health Dayton & Montgomery County. He says he no cases have been confirmed, but they are investigating some cases that are suspect. Wharton would not say how many cases they're looking at because that information can be misleading.
"Say, for example, you are looking at 10 cases. All of those cases may be very low in terms of the probability, and we don't want to mislead the public into thinking there's a danger when there's not. At the same time, we try to give specific information on confirmed cases," says Wharton.
He says that public health officials are looking thoroughly at each case to determine the nature of the illness
"You have to get the basic information, such as what they're travel requirements have been in the recent past. Have they been to Mexico? Are they someone that's been exposed to someone that's returned from Mexico? What are their symptoms? All of that information has to be investigated," says Wharton.
Wharton says the local department is working with agencies across the state and at the federal level. He says that the public will be informed if any confirmed cases of swine flu occur. © Copyright 2009, WYSO
