On February 12th 2005, in the rainforest near Anapu Brazil, Dayton Native, Sister Dorothy Stang was gunned down. Stang had spent decades working as an advocate for rural impoverished families before she was slain by ranch hands in a land dispute. Two gunmen were found guilty in the death of the 74-year-old activist, though one sentance was later overturned.
A new documentary airing later this month on HBO details Stang's death and the politically charged, court cases that followed. In a collaboration between HBO and Film Dayton, a new organization promoting film culture and economic development, the Documentary "They Killed Sister Dorothy" premieres at the Dayton Art Institute this week.
This week on WW we speak with the film's director Daniel Junge. He's been making documentary films for about 10 years now. Junge and his partern have formed a non-profit organization called JUST_MEDIA dedicated to social justice filmaking.
He begins by telling us how he became involved in telling the story of Sister Dorothy....
