Making Music in Hawaii
This January From the Top traveled across land and ocean to tape two radio broadcasts in Hawaii.
Boston, MA and Hawaii
In January of 2010, From the Top partnered with Hawaii Public Radio to bring their radio show and education programs to the island of Hawaii. From the Top taped broadcasts in Waimea (Kamuela) and Kae'au, made possible through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
The Waimea show taping occurred at Kahilu Theatre and the performers included Daniel Tekunoff, 17, Guitar, who played I. Allegretto from Sonatina by Lennox Berkeley, Alexander Hersh, 16, Cello, who played III. Rasch und mit Feuer, from Fantasy Pieces for Cello & Piano by Robert Schumann, Hailey Markman, 17, Soprano, who sang "Monica's Waltz" from The Medium by Gian Carlo Menotti, and Hannah Cho, 15, Violin, who played Sonatensatz in C minor, Scherzo, Op. posth. by Johannes Brahms. Listen to this show online and see a behind-the-scenes video.
From the Top announcer Joanne Robinson recalls, "The show was terrific, and the kids were a lot of fun. I was excited because one of my favorite vocal pieces was featured – "Monica's Waltz" from Menotti's opera The Medium. Teenage soprano Hailey Markman really brought it to life! An especially touching moment during that show was when Chris O'Riley played a piece in tribute to the late Ellen Masaki, a legendary piano teacher from Hawaii who was a great friend to From the Top. We all miss her and it was nice to be able to honor her memory."
The Kea'au broadcast was taped at the Lunalilo Center at the Kamehameha School. Performers included Lilia Xie, 16, flute, who played IV. Allegro con moto from Sonata for Flute & Piano, Op. 94 by Robert Muczynski, Sean Robbins, 16, slack key guitar, who played Ku'u Ipo Onaona by Maddy Lam, the Trifecta Trio including Lauren Williams, 17, oboe, Frank Wu, 16, piano, Quinn Delaney, 18, bassoon, performing I. Presto from Trio for Oboe, Bassoon, & Piano by Poulenc, Aris Doike, 17, cello, who played Requiebros by Gaspar Cassado, and Evan Lin, 14, piano, who played IV. Vivace from Sonata No. 2 in D Minor, Op. 14 by Sergei Prokofiev. Listen to this show online.
From the Top also visited five schools and one youth center in four different communities with the goals of inspiring the pursuit of excellence in children of all ages, engaging radio show performers in sharing their gifts, and thrilling audiences with the joy of music. Nearly 2000 community members of all ages heard From the Top performers share their music and experience of appearing on the radio show.
