Lawmakers Discuss the Bailout
Administration officials are calling for speed on the plan. Many Republicans and Democrats are hoping to slow the process down. Hoyer who is the Democratic Majority Leader in the House says Congress will alter the plan.
But he echoes Treasury Paulson, who said today that the health of the economy is at stake.
We don't want the economy to go down the tubes because if the economy goes down the tubes, the people who are always hurt, always hurt in that situation are middle class Americans and poor Americans. They're the ones that get hurt, so we want to stabilize the economy.
Democrats hope to finish work on the bill by the end of the week but Hoyer now says Congress could be in session past its scheduled adjournment date of Friday. Vice president Dick Cheney came to Capitol Hill this morning in an effort to shore up Republican support for the plan.
