Mixed Media: Dialing for Dollars
WXXI
(WXXI) -
In this Mixed Media, WXXI's Rachel Ward and media and technology reporter Scott Fybush break down what a new bill means for voice-over-IP (VOIP) customers.
The legislation, signed in late July and effective January 1, will require VOIP providers to contribute to local 911 funds, just like landline phone companies. Fund balances for 911 have been declining as customer switch away from traditional phone service.
A spokesperson for VOIP service Vonage tells WXXI that 911 fees will be "borne by the customer. It will increase the overall cost of the service to a customer by the amount of the fee imposed by the local jurisdiction."
A spokesperson for Time Warner says their phone service is not VOIP technology, and that their customers have been paying into 911 funds all along.
