Cuomo Noncommital on McCain Appointment Chatter
(2008-09-22)
(WXXI) - New York attorney general Andrew Cuomo was noncommittal Monday when asked about serving in a President McCain administration.

On a 60 Minutes interview Sunday, Republican presidential candidate John McCain complimented Cuomo's work as attorney general, and said that he might tap the AG to head the Securities and Exchange Commission if he were president.

But when asked if he would agree to serve in a McCain administration, Cuomo plead "no comment."

"My position is: we are currently in the midst of a number of investigations, Wall Street-related investigations, security investigations, short selling investigations, some of which we are doing in collaboration with the SEC. So I think any comment on my part would be inappropriate."

During the Sunday interview, McCain said that he thinks Cuomo would be able to restore credibility to the SEC. That agency regulates the nation's securities and stock markets.

McCain also said Cuomo did a "good job" as housing secretary for President Bill Clinton.

But in Rochester today, Democrat Cuomo dodged a question about whether he would serve in a Republican administration with a joke about leaving state politics for the federal government.

Cuomo is the son of Democratic New York Governor Mario Cuomo, and was a super delegate pledged to Senator Hillary Clinton in her quest for the Democratic nomination.
