City Proposals Advance
(2008-09-12)
(WXXI) - Rochester City Council Committees have recommended approval for two important proposals from Mayor Duffy.

One will authorize the city to buy the Culver Road Armory from the state -- and the other extends the operating contract for the Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial. Both proposals need a vote by City Council Tuesday night to move forward.

The Culver Road Armory includes more than 11 acres of land near Cobb's Hill Park. The city plans to spend a million dollars to buy the land through the Empire State Development Corporation so it can have some control over its future development.

Mayor Duffy also wants to extend the Blue Cross - War Memorial operating agreement with SMG Corporation of Philadelphia for five years. The city has worked out an agreement by which SMG takes on the risk of operating the arena. If it makes money, SMG gets to keep an agreed-on share of the profits. If it runs at a loss, the company absorbs the loss and the taxpayers would be off the hook.
