SUNY, CUNY Over Regulated, Underfunded, Commission Says
(2007-12-17)
(WXXI) - A new report on the state's higher education system finds the state needs to invest more money into it's public universities to remain competitive in the global economy, and should allow individual campuses to charge variable rates of tuition.

The report, by a commission set up by Governor Eliot Spitzer, also finds that the State and City University systems of New York are over- regulated and have not received adequate state support.

Governor Spitzer praised the commission's findings.

"This is a report that is bold, it is a report that is comprehensive, it is a report that is expensive," Spitzer said.

The state is facing a $4.3 billion dollar budget gap.

The Governor did not commit to fulfilling any of the specific recommendations, including the hiring of 2000 more full time professors, and creating a $3 billion dollar research fund, but he said he hoped
to incorporate many of the ideas into his State of the State message and budget next month.
