Spitzer Will Strengthen Reproductive Rights Laws
(2007-03-26)
(WXXI) -
Governor Spitzer, speaking before a group of family planning advocates, says America stands at the "cusp" of losing the rights upheld in the landmark abortion rights case Roe v. Wade, because of the current conservative makeup of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Spitzer says he will work to strengthen New York's reproductive rights laws to keep a woman's right to choose abortion legal in New York State. Spitzer says he will also take steps to make the pregnancy prevention drug Plan B more accessible. Plan B must be taken within 72 hours of conception in order to work.

"This is the best way to prevent pregnancies," Spitzer said.

Spitzer did not say how old a female should be before she can have free access to the drug, but says he's asked his health department to review present policies, which restrict minors from getting the drug unless they first go to a doctor.

The governor also said sex education for teenagers should be based on science, not politics, and that he recommends everything "from abstinence to smart protection".
