State Grant to Allow Geva Theatre to Renovate
(2009-10-14)
(WXXI) - The Geva Theatre will be making some much-needed improvements to its building, thanks to a $2 million state grant.

The money will be used to repair some exterior damage, upgrade acoustics in the Mainstage, and do other interior improvements.

Assemblyman Joe Morelle says the investment in the Geva Theatre is important to downtown Rochester. Morelle says a vibrant cultural climate has enormous benefits to the host community.

The Geva Theatre moved into the former Naval Armory at Woodbury Boulevard and Clinton Avenue in 1982. The building was constructed in 1868. Artistic Director Mark Cuddy says it's important for the Geva to be good stewards by keeping the building in good repair so that it's around for another 140 years.

Cuddy says the grant will transform the Geva into a 21st century theatre.
