O'Flynn to Return as County Sheriff
(2009-11-04)
(WXXI) - Republican Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn will keep his job, picking up 69 percent of the vote to defeat Democratic challenger Dan Greene.

In accepting his win, O'Flynn thanked voters for saying they wanted to keep him as sheriff, though he says the race was an ugly campaign behind-the-scenes.

Democrats had attempted to link O'Flynn to the Robutrad scandal, in which county workers did political work and favors for Republican politicians on the county clock.

Democratic chair Joe Morelle says he's surprised that issue, and other high profile cases of corruption in the Greece Police Department, didn't resonate more with voters in the sheriff's race.

Personal politics also came into play. Democrat Greene has previously served as undersheriff for Republican O'Flynn and says he did not leave that position voluntarily.
