Republicans Keep County Legislature
(2009-11-04)
(WXXI) - Republicans held onto their slim majority in the Monroe County legislature Tuesday night.

That disappointed Democrats who had hoped to pick up a seat and the majority in that body, to provide a counterpoint to Monroe County's Republican County Executive Maggie Brooks.

The legislature's Republican majority leader, Dan Quatro, says it helped that the party stuck to its message.

"We protected the taxpayers in this county. We knew what they wanted in their hearts and we brought it to them with exceptional candidates. And we didn't just win - we won big."

The night was a disappointment for many Democrats, including legislature minority leader Harry Bronson.

"We that that we were getting our message out that we were the party that would govern better, would be more fiscally responsible with the county budget, would end the corruption that's happening in this county and would really put people people before politics. Unfortunately it didn't turn out the way we wanted it to this evening."

The balance in the legislature will remain 15 to 14, with Republicans holding their majority.

Key leaders in the Democratic party kept their seats. Bronson and Paul Haney each took home more than 60 percent of the vote, and Carrie Andrews was uncontested.

The 29th district seat also stayed in Democrats' hands. Saul Maneiro picking up that seat, which was vacated by newly elected school board member Jose Cruz.

On the Republican side, Ciaran Hanna beat out former Suffolk county legislator Nora Bredes. Mike Rockow picked up the seat that's being vacated by legislature president Wayne Zyra. And Rick Antelli won the seat he was appointed to over the summer.
