Andrews, Bredes and Maneiro Get Legislature Nod
(2009-09-16)
(WXXI) - Tuesday's primary featured five Monroe County Legislature match-ups.

In the Democratic party, incumbent Carrie Andrews beat back a challenge from Janice Bowers for her 21st district seat and newcomer Saul Maneiro won a spot on the ticket in the 29th district.

Democrat Nora Bredes, a former Suffolk County legislator, will also be on the Democratic ballot in November, facing Republican Ciaran Hanna.

Bredes says her campaign is in good shape for the general election.

"We're ready to bring accountable, open, effective government to Monroe County. I think if the Democrats can achieve a majority - a new majority in the legislature, we really become watch dogs, and not lap dogs, which is what the legislature has been."

The legislature currently has a one-seat Republican majority.

In the Independence Party primary for the 2nd district, Mike Rockow handily beat Todd Brindle. That gives him the right to square off against Democrat Sheldon Myers, in the general election for the seat that's held by retiring legislature president Wayne Zyra.

According to unofficial results from the Board of Elections, John Howland won the Independence line in the 13th district, but a spokesperson for county Democrats says a write-in candidate actually earned more votes.

The true results of that contest will be revealed in the coming weeks.
