Syracuse Lawyer Running for NY's 25th Congressional District
(2011-11-28)
(WXXI) - Political newcomer Brianne Murphy plans to force a Democratic primary against former Congressman Dan Maffei in New York's 25th Congressional District. The winner would face Republican Ann Marie Buerkle in the general election in November.

Buerkle narrowly defeated Maffei in 2010 to represent the district which currently stretches from Syracuse to the Monroe County towns of Irondequoit, Webster and Penfield. It is still unknown how lines will be drawn in New York as part of redistricting made necessary by population changes that will decrease the state's congressional delegation by two seats.

Murphy announced her intentions Monday in a visit to several spots in the district, including Webster. Murphy says she isn't running against Dan Maffei, she's running for the voters in Central New York.

Murphy she says she's been a fighter and worked hard her whole life, she's been an attorney and an advocate, and she understands the struggles and hardships people are facing in Central New York. And she says she wants to be an advocate for those families.
