Local Faith Group Responds to City Violence
Pastor Marlowe Washington and members of Rise Up Rochester says they're upset about the two young men who were gunned down early Sunday morning.
Washington told reporters at Baber A.M.E Church Monday that he agrees with mayor Duffy's response that killings are not poverty driven, but it'll take more than the community to address the problem.
"It's larger than just a neighborhood community issue. I has to everybody sitting at the table," says Washington. "Again, ... what's the definition of community everybody? Government, community, churches, doctors, nurses, social worker, grandma, cousin-13th cousin. It has to be everybody at the table. So that's my definition of community."
Washington says he's calling a community-wide meeting within the next two days, with the mayor.
They plan to gather at the Crime Victim Center on South Plymouth.
Washington says during that meeting, he hopes to address the issues of overburden parents and Monroe Avenue having a bar on every corner.
He says the point is not to put night spots out of business, but to establish cooperation and togetherness.
Washington says city violence is a heart issue and will take relationship to heal the community.
