(WXXI) - If your plans include a boat trip on the Erie Canal through the Newark area this week, be advised that a portion of the canal will close Sunday, July 5 at 10 pm, for several days.

The New York State Canal Corporation says boat traffic will be restricted between Lock E-28B in Newark and Lock E-29 in Palmyra, effective at 7 am on Monday, July 6. The water level in this area will be lowered gradually by approximately five feet, beginning at 10 pm on Sunday, July 5.

The Canal Corporation encourages any boaters concerned with the reduced depth to move their vessels to the east past Lock E-28B before 10 pm on Sunday.

The water levels and closing are part of a renewed effort to remove a hydraulic barge that sank near Maple Avenue in Newark last month. Once it is removed, the canal will be reopened.
