StoryCorps arrives in Rochester
(2009-07-02)
(WXXI) - StoryCorps arrived in Rochester on Thursday. Most N-P-R listeners are familiar with the oral history project, which captures the stories of people across the country -- in their own words. Some of the stories are broadcast on public radio stations; all of them are preserved at the Library of Congress.

The mobile StoryCorps booth will be parked outside the Rundel Library downtown for the rest of the month, as part of the City of Rochester's 175th Anniversary celebration. Among the first area residents to take part in the project were musician Gap Mangione and his daughter Ardis. He said they didn't have a list of questions to ask each other - they were simply going to improvise like any good jazz musicians should.

Rochester Mayor Robert Duffy's Chief of Staff Jean Howard helped welcome StoryCorps to town, and urged anyone getting together with family this holiday weekend to remember how powerful human stories are.

Reservations are required to take part in StoryCorps. The last opportunity to make those reservations is Friday morning at ten on our web site, WXXI.org, or you can call 800-850-4406.
