Which Reigns Supreme: New Or Old Rock?
Pitchfork editor Ryan Schrieber faces off against Dave Thompson, author of I Hate New Music, in a momentous battle of new and old rock music. The two spin tracks to intensify the debate, pitting M.I.A. against Focus and, yes, Bon Iver against Thin Lizzy. World Cafe Host David Dye plays mediator between Dave Thompson and Ryan Schreiber, who take up the momentous battle of old school vs. new music. Which reigns supreme?

Making the case for contemporary music is Schreiber, editor of the Internet publication Pitchfork and a champion of contemporary rock. And in the old-school corner is Thompson, critic and author of the classic-rock manifesto I Hate New Music.

As guest DJs, they spin select tracks to intensify the debate, pitting M.I.A. against Focus and Bon Iver against Thin Lizzy. Delving into some of the core dividing issues, the rivals discuss how the Internet has affected the process of music discovery, and how musicians draw from prior eras.

This story was originally aired on May 21st, 2009.
