Shakin' the Mess Outta Misery is the story of a young black girl's coming of age in the South in the 1960s. Where are the “Big Mamas” of today?? Shakin’ visits how women in a tightly knit community, displays support, care and guidance for one another.
Daughter, the main character and narrator, lives with the memories of her mother who died when she was very young. As a tradition of the community, Daughter is raised by some blood related and some not. Shakin' the Mess Outta Misery paints a vivid portrait of the members of the strength of African American women.
