RVSC is a nonprofit citizen diplomacy network that creates and strengthens partnerships between the United States and international communities. Sister Cities’ partnerships thrive in more than 2,000 cities in the US that have partnered with 136 countries around the world. Over the last 49 years, Roanoke has developed seven Sister Cities’ partners: Wonju, Korea; Kisumu, Kenya; Pskov, Russia; Florianópolis, Brazil; Opole, Poland; Lijiang, China; and St.-Lo, France. The organization strives to build global cooperation, promote cultural understanding and stimulate economic development. To accomplish this mission, RVSC annually raises funds for regional and international projects.
RVSC funds have sustained cultural, educational, medical and public health projects in many of Roanoke’s seven sister cities and given direct support to programs and individuals in and around Roanoke. For example, in Kisumu, Kenya, RVSC efforts have helped to fund technical programs, scholarships, orphanages and HIV/AIDS care. In Pskov, Russia, the RVSC city partnership has furnished medical supplies and equipment for hospitals, orphanages and a hospice. In Lijiang, China, academic and artistic scholarships are awarded to needy children who otherwise would be unable to attend school or participate in the available programming. In Florianópolis, Brazil, RVSC has provided support for Love’s Little Nest, an orphanage and school for children living with HIV. Here at home, RVSC directly benefits citizens in our region through high school and college exchange programming. For example, Roanoke and Pskov doctors and nurses have exchanged visits and have spent time becoming acquainted with the medical facilities and practices of each other's cities. Also, RVSC has provided support for a 20-year exchange agreement between Ferrum College and Pskov University students and professors. Overall, in the last several decades, due to the efforts of the RVSC membership, hundreds of students, professors and business people have experienced other countries, their language and customs and as a result, created and continue to strengthen academic and business alliances throughout the world.
The RVSC’s board welcomes all interested citizens to help raise funds for these and other worthy programs. Join your neighbors on December 11th for a fun time and an opportunity to learn more about Sister Cities International and our beneficial work in Roanoke and around the world.
