Cass Scenic Railroad State Park hosts a series of events in the next few weeks
(wvmr) - Things are chugging right along at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, and they've got a few events coming up over the course of the next couple of weeks you might want to think about checking out. Cass event programmer Monica Fleming said this Saturday; they'll be hosting the annual VIPP picnic.

"The Department of Natural Resources Parks Division has what they call a VIPP, Very Important Parks Person picnic every year," says Fleming. "That is a group of people that have traveled to all the parks or have signed up for the VIPP program. This is an annual event the parks program does and this year it's here at Cass, and next year it will be at a different park. One of the events they have for Saturday night at 7 p.m. is Bil Lepp and he will be doing a presentation of some of his stories and things like that."

Lepp is a comedian and story teller, he's written a few books, and he's a five-time champion of the West Virginia's Liars Contest. Fleming said she's seen Lepp's act before, and she enjoyed it.

"It was very good," she says. "Good for all ages, funny, very personable even when he's not on stage doing his comedy and stuff like that."

Fleming said registration for VIPP members took place earlier in the week, and there was a cost associated with it, but Lepp's performance Saturday night is free and open to the public.

Next weekend at Cass, the park is hosting Cass Harvest Day. Fleming said they'll be having an apple butter making demonstration, a dance team from Virginia will be visiting, the Little Switzerland Cloggers, and an author, Donald Watts will be doing a book signing, of his book 'Day Break Over Appalachia.'

"We'll be having Irish road bowling happening on Old Cass Road," Fleming says. "Also what they call a Meet the Breed event with a bloodhound group. They're going to be doing some training as well as having some bloodhounds out for people to meet and see what the dogs do and learn a little more about bloodhounds and how they track and stuff like that."

Attendees at Cass Harvest Day will have a chance for a whistle blowing, as well.

"Our locomotive will be down there and people can get into it and blow a whistle. Then at 6 p.m. we'll be showing the movie 'Fifth String,' presented by one of our commentators and someone that was in the movie, Roger Cain. That'll be in our Showcase building and it'll be free."

Cass harvest Day takes place Saturday, Sept 21 between 9 and 5. For more information about upcoming events at Cass, call 304 456 4300.
