WVIA-TV's State of Pennsylvania Presents 'When Judges Stain our Kids'
(2009-02-20)
(wvia) - Who judges the judges, what does the growing judicial and political scandal mean to our region and will we ever be able to make it up to the kids? WVIA-TV's State of Pennsylvania welcomes to its High Defintion Theater Studio several parents who contend their kids were wrongly sent to juvenile detention by judges who were paid for it. "When Judges Stain our Kids" airs Thursday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. on WVIA.

Also taking viewer and audience questions will be Lourdes Rosado, one of the lead attorneys for the Juvenile Law Center in York, PA; Wilke -Barre Attorney Stephen B. Killian; child psychologist Robert E. Griffin; and Citizens' Voice columnist Paul Golias.

Luzerne County judges Mark Ciavarella and Michael Conahan have pleaded guilty to wire fraud and income tax fraud for accepting about $2.6 million in kickbacks to send juveniles to two private detention centers. The judges received the payoffs from 2003 until 2006.

Hundreds of regional children were sent directly to detention unaware of their right to legal counsel. Devastated parents now seek legal recourse and the impact on Luzerne County could take a decade to unfold. What will all of this mean to the kids and what kinds of problems will they face in the future? Are there those who will defend the judges' actions?
