(wvia) - Funded by a $5,000 grant from the Scranton Area Community Foundation, WVIA recently brought its PBS Kids in the Classroom program to two second grade classrooms at the Bancroft Elementary School in Scranton.

Designed as a "Field Trip in the Classroom" for Elementary Students the second grade students watched an episode of Arthur that focused on learning basic math concepts and working within a budget titled "Grandma Thora Appreciation Day".

The students worked in groups of 4 and were given a $30 (play money) budget to plan a party just like Arthur did in the related episode. The Students used supermarket flyers, calculators, poster board, markers and tape to plan their party. Each group had to work together as a team to decide what they wanted at their party and then add or eliminate items so they did not spend more than $30. Each group came up to the front of the classroom and talked about their party.

This hands-on activity was followed by story time with Debby the Clubhouse Mom from WVIA. Miss Debby read "Arthur's Mystery Envelope". As a surprise at the end of the program Arthur from PBS Kids visited the Second Grade Classrooms and each student received an Arthur Chapter Book along with a PBS Kids bookmark, PBS Kids lenticular ruler and PBS Kids Summer Activity Booklet.

A total of 40 second grade students enjoyed this PBS Kids in the Classroom presentation that was sponsored by the Scranton Area Community Foundation. This was the first in three school visits sponsored by the Scranton Area Community Foundation.
