Join WVIA for the Artist Celebration on April 11 at Mainstreet Galleries in Kingston, PA - Public Invited

(wvia) - WVIA will spotlight visual student artists from throughout northeast and central Pennsylvania during the Artist Celebration on Friday, April 11, 2014 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Mainstreet Galleries located at 370 Pierce Street in Kingston, PA. This event is free and open to the public. The artwork will continue to be on display until Saturday, May 3, 2014.

The celebration will showcase artwork from the top 10 visual artists from WVIA's 2013-14 Artist of the Week program and participants in the 2014 Congressional Arts Competition. During the event WVIA will announce the Artists of the Year from the artists, whose artwork will be on display. They along with a winner from each of the 3 congressional districts represented in the Congressional Arts Competition will be invited to appear on this year's WVIA Scholastic Achievement Awards Show, which will be broadcast on Thursday, May 15, 2014 on WVIA-TV.

The students who have been chosen as the top 10 Artists of the Week whose artwork will be displayed during the Artist Celebration are Lucy Shemo from Wyoming Valley West, Alex Tomlinson from Scranton High School, Emily Vitkaukas from Southern Columbia High School, Paige Fratmatco from Western Wayne High School, Rachel Furgeson from Hazleton High School, Jen Nawracki from Lakeland High School, Tessa Paul from Lake Lehman High School, Bethany Dittman from Lewisburg Area High School, Darrian Kellar from Selinsgrove High School, and Mitchell Steiner from Milville Area High School.

Submissions for the 2014 Congressional Arts Competition will be accepted until Wednesday, April 2, 2014. Artwork must be dropped off at the WVIA Studios in Pittston, PA during normal business hours (Weekdays 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and must be matted, but does not have to be framed. To be eligible for the Congressional Arts Competition the high school student must reside in the district represented by Congressmen Lou Barletta, Tom Marino or Matt Cartwright (PA 10th, 11th or 17th). Initiated by Members of the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982, the Congressional Arts Competition is a nationwide annual art competition that allows high school students from the fifty states, the District of Columbia, and territories to showcase their artistic ability. WVIA is proud to host the qualification for Congressmen Matt Cartwright, Lou Barletta and Tom Marino for the 17th, 10th and 11th Congressional Districts. The First Place student from each district and his/her immediate family will travel to Washington, DC for the Artistic Discovery Exhibition Opening, where they will have their artwork displayed for one year in our nation's Capitol building.
