WVIA welcomes the Grammy nominated Eaken Piano Trio to its next Simply Grand Concert Feb. 22, 2014 - Public Invited

(wvia) - WVIA's next Simply Grand Concert features the Grammy -nominated Eaken Piano Trio and will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 at 4 p.m. in the Sordoni High Definition Theater at the WVIA Public Media Studios in Pittston, PA. The varied program includes the Piano Trio in C minor, Op. 101 by Johannes Brahms, the Concierto para Trio by Argentine bandoneon virtuoso Astor Piazzola and a Trio by the contemporary composer James Cohn. Seating is free, but limited. To make reservations call 570-655-2808 or reserve seats online at The concert will be recorded by radio and TV for broadcast.

The members of the Eaken Trio are John Eaken, violin; Gloria Whitney, piano and Andrew Rammon, cello who is also principal cellist with the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra. The Eaken Trio has traveled extensively throughout America, Canada, Europe, and Asia. They were "Artists in Residence" for 10 years at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, and have held residencies at many other colleges and universities including Harvard, Stanford, USC, The University of Maryland, and Penn State. The Trio is heard regularly on classical music radio stations including National Public Radio's All Things Considered and Performance Today. CDs released by the Trio can be found on the Naxos, Catalpa Classics, and Con Brio labels. Their Home for the Holidays CD was nominated for a Grammy . They have two NPR programs titled "Home for the Holidays," which have aired on over 100 stations nationwide during the last 14 holiday seasons. The programs help raise awareness of the homeless problems in America through the music of the Trio and insights by prominent Americans such as Barbara Bush, Maya Angelou, Leo Buscaglia, Sam Nunn, and many others. The Trio has been the recipient of many commissions including trios written for them by Lalo Shifrin, Gerald Shipiro, Timothy Greatbatch, Allen Menton and others.

The WVIA "Simply Grand" concert series showcases the talent of regional classical musicians. Since the series began in 1990, dozens of regional musicians have been featured. The concerts are recorded for broadcast before a live audience in the Sordoni High Definition Theater at WVIA Public Media Studios.
