(wvia) - WVIA Public Media is launching a new television program titled, "The K-12 Conversation", and you can be part of it. "The K-12 Conversation" is a contemporary topics discussion about all things education for parents, students, teachers, administrators, academics and policymakers. We plan to take a sweeping look at education in America today and get to the heart of what we want from our public education system.

All are invited to be part of the live audience during the taping of the first episode on Wednesday, April 17 at 5 p.m. in the Sordoni High Definition Theater at the WVIA Studios in Pittston, PA. To reserve your free seats in the live audience, please call Andrea O'Neill, director of education at WVIA at 570-602-1182 or visit http://www.wviatv.org/hi-deftheaterentry.

The topic of the first episode affects all students in Pennsylvania - the pros and cons of the Common Core Initiative. What is Common Core? Why is it necessary? What is it meant to accomplish and will it accomplish what it is supposed to? Are our teachers and students ready? How will the incorporated Keystone Exams affect our children and our schools? How will it affect graduation rates? Is Common Core the answer? Or are we missing what our students really need? How do we make sure our graduating seniors are college and/or career ready? These and many more questions will be asked during the first episode of "The K-12 Conversation".

Our panel will include Pennsylvania Department of Education Secretary, Ron Tomalis and Howard Gardner School Principal, Vince Rizzo.

"The K-12 Conversation" television series is produced by WVIA Public Media Studios and will be broadcast on all PBS stations throughout Pennsylvania.

The host of "The K-12 Conversation" is W.J. O'Reilly, who was trained at Harvard. O'Reilly has voiced his highly original, sometimes visionary commentary on AC360, The Situation Room, CNN's Election 2012 Roundtable and CNN's Money Summit. As an educator, he has co-founded several public and private schools and is currently headmaster of The Hanal School in Ridgefield Park, NJ.

WVIA Public Media is a catalyst, convener and educator, using media, partnerships, powerful ideas and programs to improve lives and advance the best attributes of an enlightened society.
