MGM Classic The Thin Man this week's feature on the WVIA FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES
(2010-06-29)
(wvia) - This Friday at 8 p.m. watch MGM classic, The Thin Man, on WVIA Friday Night at the Movies presented by Lenahan and Dempsey on WVIA TV.

A zany blend of screwball comedy and murder mystery this 1934 MGM Classic The Thin Man stars William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles, married amateur detectives, with Edward Ellis and Maureen O'Sullivan in supporting roles.

Former detective Nick Charles (Powell), and his wife Nora (Loy) are attempting to settle down when he's pulled back into service by a friend's disappearance and possible involvement in a murder. The friend, Clyde Wynant (Ellis), has mysteriously vanished after his former girlfriend, Julia Wolfe, was found dead. Wynant quickly becomes the prime suspect, but his daughter Dorothy (O'Sullivan) can't believe he did it. She convinces Nick to take the case much to the amusement of his socialite wife. With a drink in his hand and a smirk on his face, the detective stumbles off to find clues. The mystery deepens as the empty martini glasses and dead bodies pile up. Between witty exchanges, the couple (with their dog Asta) manages to piece things together. The murderer is finally revealed in an amusing dinner-party scene, featuring all of the suspects.

The Thin Man nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director (W.S. Van Dyke), Best Actor (Powell) and Best Adapted Screenplay. In 1997, the film was added to the United States National Film Registry having been deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

Movies are back. Don't miss these award winning classics and contemporary favorites on the WVIA Friday Night at the Movies presented by Lenahan and Dempsey each week starting at 8 p.m. on WVIA TV.
