"Aqua Farming" Is Florida's Future For Fish
(2006-11-03)
(WUSF) - The report by a team of researchers in the journal "Science" says if current trends of over-fishing and pollution continue, almost all current seafood populations face collapse by the year 2048.

But Dr. Kevan Main, Director for the Center for Aquaculture Research at Sarasota's Mote Marine Laboratory, says we'll still be eating seafood in 40 years - but the industry will undergo some major changes.

MAIN: From commercial fishing to farming. Just as we have seen in land based agriculture. We don't hunt and gather the land based animals that we consume... they're farmed.

Main says researchers at Mote are working on more effective methods for raising seafood on fish farms and in giant tanks rather than harvesting it from the oceans.
