Lawmakers Push for More Affordable Housing
(2006-04-18)
(WUSF) - A bi-partisan coalition of lawmakers is pushing a bill designed to create more affordable housing units. Every three years, counties would assess land they own and determine which sites would be suitable for affordable housing.

Then, builders would be given a host of incentives - from tax credits to grants -to develop the property. The offer also extends to organizations like Habitat for Humanity. Rep. Mike Davis of Naples is the bill's sponsor.

DAVIS: I think that there is a lot of good things that are in this bill, and I'm optimistic that we're going to get it to the governor for his signature.

Gov. Jeb Bush has expressed concern about the bill, without saying why. He's traveling through the Middle East this week and couldn't be reached for further comment.
