Tampa Gets Lesson in Creative Development
(2005-09-15)
(WUSF) - Anamaria Wills has been instrumental in helping the economy of the English province of Yorkshire rebound from one of declining industry to tapping its creative potential. She spoke to members of Creative Tampa Bay about how to foster businesses based on inventive minds.

She says the first thing to do is to get creative types to talk to influential people outside their small group.

WILLS: We need to talk to the practitioners of economic development. We need to talk to the mayors, and the councilors. We need to take a part in civic life. We need to be advocating and lobbying in the role of the creative sector, in helping not just the economics, but actually the social development of the area.

Wills says it's imperative to nurture the creative potential of minorities.

WILLS: In the UK, we use artists to work in disadvantaged communities. We use them to work with the hospital trusts, doing communications between doctors and communities, so there's a better understanding there. We use them in prisons, working with young offenders. All of that is using creative skills to give confidence and to give self-esteem to the different community groups that then affects the transition from deprevation to economic activity.

That can be used to help the underprivileged learn to channel their talents into a useful profession.
