Fate of Belleview Biltmore on Table Tonight
(2005-09-07)
>
(WUSF) - Representatives from DeBartolo Development are expected to announce their plans for a town center on the site of the Belleview Biltmore. The announcement comes of the heels of an application by the hotel's current owners to demolish the entire property.

But the attorney for the city of Belleair is also working on a historic preservation ordinance that could forestall those plans. Although the old hotel is on the National Register of Historic Places, that offers no protection from demolition.

Historic preservationists are expected to pack the meeting. Ed Jameson is vice president of Save the Biltmore Preservationists.

JAMESON: This is a masterpiece. To lose a hotel of this magnitude is really a shame. There's two miles of historic corridors with moldings, there's the Tiffany glass ballroom, it's absolutely gorgeous inside. It's really a centerpiece of Pinellas history.

Both groups are expected to be at the special meeting at 5:30 p.m. today at Bellair City Hall.
