General Addresses USF Cadets
(2008-09-11)
(WUSF) - On the anniversary of September 11th, young military cadets at the University of South Florida heard from the Commander at Central Command which oversees the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The flags were at half staff outside the ROTC building. Inside, Gen. Martin Dempsey updated ROTC cadets on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

He would then compliment the young officers for joining the military during a time of war.

"It is telling that they continue to join the ranks knowing full well that we may have to put them in harm's way at some point, in fact, there's almost a certainty of that," Dempsey said.

For Air Force Cadet Marlene Rivera, signing up during wartime was not a concern. She was in eighth grade when the terrorists hit on 9-11. She will graduate May 2010 and be commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Air Force.
