Election 2008
Thompson a Florida Favorite
TAMPA
(WUSF) -
The GOP Convention is in full swing in St. Paul. President Bush addressed the party faithful via satellite last night, but it was the speech from a former senator and presidential candidate that got rave reviews from the Florida delegation.
WUSF checks in with Republican delegate Greg Truax.
We caught up with Truax as he and other Florida delegates attended a reception inside the James J. Hill Reference Library, a historic building with tall columns and marble floors.
Truax had been looking forward to hearing Sen. Joe Lieberman's speech. But, it was oratory of former presidential candidate Fred Thompson that impressed him and the Florida delegation.
"A number of delegates remarked he (Thompson) should have made more speeches like that when he was campaigning for president himself," Truax said.
He added that President Bush received a standing ovation for his service to country.
