Election 2008
A Day of Giving at GOP Convention
TAMPA
(WUSF) -
The Republican National Convention is underway in St. Paul. Similar to what we did for the Democratic Convention last week, WUSF is checking in with a Florida delegate for a glimpse at what's going on through their eyes.
Hurricane Gustav curtailed first day events, but it did not dampen the Florida delegation's enthusiasm. Many in the group donned the signature Florida shirts worn by tollbooth workers on the turnpike including delegate Greg Truax of Tampa.
But, he says the hurricane victims remained the focus. At the Florida breakfast Mosaic announced it was contributing $200,000 to the American Red Cross. And, during the convention, delegates were asked to donate via text message.
Truax says First Lady Laura Bush was the highlight of Monday. And, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist did make it to the convention via video tape along with three other Republican governors from the Gulf Coast.
