Florida's Struggling Economy
(2008-08-15)
St. Rep. Dan Gelber (D) of Miami
(WUSF) - Florida's economy is struggling. Unemployment is high and state revenues are down. One Florida lawmaker says it's time for legislators to look at themselves instead of blaming local governments for the problems.

More than a half-million Floridians are out of work. Florida is second in the nation for mortgage foreclosures. And it's estimated that state revenues have dropped more than a billion dollars.

"I am just sick and tired of my colleagues in Tallahassee for blaming you for any of these problems," State Rep. Dan Gelber of Miami told hundreds of mayors at the annual Florida League of Cities convention in Tampa. "Honestly, so much of the problems arise in Tallahassee."

Gelber was one of four lawmakers recognized by the League for defending municipal issues at the state level.
