Barack Obama's Speech
ST. PETERSBURG
(WUSF) -
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama addressed 1,000 supporters at a town-hall meeting in St. Petersburg.
During his stump speech, he called for a $1,000 `"emergency'" rebate to consumers struggling with high fuel prices. He would finance it with a windfall profits tax on the oil industry.
In a question-and-answer session that followed, Obama proclaimed his support for a national catastrophic insurance fund to help with Florida's insurance crisis. He promised improved benefits and care for military veterans, especially those who are homeless. And, he said creating a comprehensive energy policy would be the top priority for his first 100 days in the White House.
