USF Students Held on Explosives Charges
(2007-08-06)
(WUSF) - Federal authorities say two Middle Eastern men based in Tampa were arrested near a South Carolina Navy base with several pipe bombs in their car.

An FBI spokeswoman says a joint state-federal investigation is under way to see if there was any terrorism connection but no link had been found yet. According to an affidavit with his arrest warrant, one admitted he made the pipe bombs from items he bought at Wal-Mart.

Both men are college students from the University of South Florida.

The FBI contacted the USF Police Department Sunday. USF Police Lt. Meg Ross says the university is cooperating with the investigation and she's limited on what she can say.

Ahmed Mohamed is from Kuwait and entered USF in January as an engineering graduate student. He did his undergraduate studies in Cairo.

Yousef Megahed is from Egypt, but he is a permanent U.S. resident. He enrolled in USF in 2004.

Lt. Ross says USF Police have had only minor contact with the either student.
