Light Rail Rolling Toward 2010 Ballot
Rolling toward Hillsborough County?
(WUSF) - Hillsborough County Commissioners voted to place a penny sales tax referendum on November's ballot. They still have to take one more vote on the language of the ballot measure, but that's a mere technicality after today's vote.

A majority of board members said the county's transportation woes will only get worse, and that we can't build enough roads to keep pace with the expected growth.

One way of broadening support for the plan is spreading about a quarter of the tax money to expand the existing road network. And the capacity of the county's bus system - the HARTline - would be doubled. The key issue is what would be the region's first light rail line. The initial leg would connect downtown Tampa to USF and to the Westshore area and Tampa International Airport. It's envisioned as the beginning of a plan to have light rail connecting St. Petersburg and Clearwater to Tampa, with another spur reaching into Pasco County.
