Sen. Nelson: No to "Big Oil"
(2009-08-26)
(WUSF) - Sen. Nelson stood in front of a picture of an oil-fouled beach to hammer home his point: any benefits from drilling off the Gulf Coast could be offset by just one spill.

Nelson teamed up with members of the local Sierra Club and tourism officials from Pinellas County to oppose the move to open Florida's coastlines to offshore drilling. He noted that two previous spills - off Treasure Island and Fort DeSoto - had long-lasting repercussions on Pinellas' tourism industry.

"And if the state legislature and and the governor of this state in any way in the lands within their jurisdiction - out to 10 statute miles - are going to allow drilling with the threat of doing this to our beaches," Nelson says, "and then I'm wondering what state they will be representing."

State legislators have warmed to the idea of offshore drilling, which would be allowed as part of a comprehensive energy package that will be presented to Congress this fall.
