(WUSF) -
Jack Parrish is one of those rare people who actually looks forward to hurricanes. Only he does it at 30,000 feet in the air. Parrish has been a flight director for NOAA for 20 years, and gets to ride on their "hurricane hunter" planes into the center of the storm. He's gotten close to every hurricane from Opal and Hugo to Katrina. Parrish has been based at MacDill Air Force Base since 1993, after a bout with Hurricane Andrew that swept away his home. He spoke recently with WUSF's Steve Newborn.
