USF Lockdown Suspect Arrested

(WUSF) - Wednesday morning, police arrested a USF accounting graduate for making a false bomb threat that led to Monday's lockdown at the University of South Florida Tampa campus.

The initial 9-11 caller gave a fake name and stated that a man armed with a gun and a bomb was at the USF library. A police assault team responded.

Two additional alerts kept police busy Monday. But, detectives investigated the 9-11 recording and Facebook entries. That evidence led to arrest USF alum Markenson Innocent.

"The original caller is now under arrest in the Hillsborough County Jail," USF Lt. Meg Ross said, "The investigation on this does continue to determine whether or not there were weapons involved."

The 26-year-old Innocent is charged with making a "false report concerning planting a bomb on state property."

USF spokesman Michael Hoad says considering history, the police responded appropriately.

"After 9-11 if you do something funny in an airport, they're going to shutdown the airport," Hoad said. "After Virginia Tech, if you do something funny at a university, we're going to take it just as seriously."

Another student was arrested on the same charge Monday for claiming he had a bomb while riding on a campus shuttle bus. He later said he was only joking.
