Hurricane Preparedness
(2009-07-03)
(WUSF) - For several hours today, a crew of USF students wandered around the parking lot of the I-75 rest area near Wesley Chapel, asking people if they wanted to talk about their hurricane preparations.

Most said they didn't have any. But a few sat down with the students and filled out a form filled with 128 questions.

Next comes the tougher part - getting students to volunteer to go to shelters during an actual hurricane, and see how these plans jibe with what actually happened. Jennifer Collins is the lead faculty member on the project.

"Sometimes, there's a big difference between what they intend to do and what they're actually doing," Collins says. "And it will be the first of its kind study in Florida to really go out at the time of the hurricane, instead of looking at intended - or after the fact - looking at past."

She says the study will be used to see if education efforts on hurricane preparedness should be changed.
