Tampa IKEA on Track
(2008-04-01)
(WUSF) - Iconic Swedish furniture and food are already being sold in Florida at IKEA stores in Orlando and Sunrise. In the summer of 2009, you'll be able to find those items and U.S. made goods at a Tampa IKEA store.

The economic slowdown that's hit retailers recently has not affected plans to build a Tampa store roughly the size of seven football fields.

"When you're business is built on offering affordable prices, we're actually more desirous when down economic times," says IKEA spokesman Joseph Roth.

The Swedish based company has finalized the land purchase for the Tampa store, selected a contractor and completed most of the required permitting.

Tampa's store will be one of only two US stores opened in 2009. But that's not the only expansion in the works.

IKEA is opening its first US factory in Danville, VA this year to manufacture wood products.
