Kentucky American Water Rebuffs Council Request
(2010-03-16)
(wuky) - KAW spokesperson Susan Lancho says the matter is already being taken up by the Public Service Commission; the legal governing body and concerned council members will have ample opportunity to voice their concerns during upcoming hearings. Lancho adds that 90% of the utility's requested rate hike is tied to construction of a multi-million dollar water treatment plant; something KAW felt necessary to ensure reliable water supply and service to its customers.

Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry released a statement following the declined invitation calling KAW's decision "regrettable". The Mayor went on to say that he and the council oppose the 37.5% rate increase request, calling it excessive, especially since just last year Kentucky American Water raised its rates 18%. The Mayor says he's convinced a futher rate hike "will impose a hardship on many citizens".
