Closing Arguments in Legislator Fraud Trial Begin Today
(2008-09-03)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Attorneys are set to present closing arguments in the fraud trial of state Rep. Sue Schmitz.

Defense attorneys and prosecutors will present their final arguments to jurors Wednesday. U.S. District Judge David Proctor says jurors could begin deliberations by Wednesday afternoon.

Schmitz, a 63-year-old Democrat from Madison County, is the first legislator to be tried in the wide-ranging investigation of Alabama's two-year college system.

She is charged with using political connections to get a job with the two-year college system's Community Intensive Training for Youth program and then rarely showing up for work.

Schmitz's attorneys have argued she received little supervision or support from her supervisors.
