Wife Of Former Shelton State President To Plead Guilty
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - The wife of the former president of Shelton State Community College has agreed to plead guilty to three counts of wire fraud and to forfeit more than $150,000.

Melinda Umphrey of McCalla faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.00. The plea agreement was filed Tuesday.

Prosecutors say Umphrey was fraudulently employed at the Alabama Fire College at Shelton State from June 2001 to December 2003 with an annual salary of about $40,000.

Federal investigators looking into corruption in the state's two-year college system found that Umphrey performed no legitimate work to earn $127,594.46 in gross wages and benefits valued at $29,139.82.

The 48-year-old former state employee also used the salary to maximize her retirement benefits and accrue service time in the state of Alabama's retirement system.
