Ala. To Ask For Extension For GPS Program, Rebid Project
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Officials at the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles will soon call for new vendor bids to get a program monitoring sex offenders back on track.

Parole board internal affairs director Mike Feehan said Wednesday an Invitation To Bid will be issued within days and a two-year extension is necessary to keep a $600,000 federal grant for the program.

Other parolees and probationers will also be served by the Global Positioning System program.

The Department of Justice issued the grant to Alabama back in November 2005, but it has been repeatedly stalled by vendor complaints and other glitches.

A service agreement was reached with Omnilink Systems last October and 21 inmates were outfitted with the devices.

But the program stalled again in March because Omnilink wasn't registered to do business in the state.
